Who are the
Volunteer
Firefighters in Your
Community?
They are:
· your next door neighbour,
· the soccer mom down the street, or
· the mill worker who you see at the local gas station each morning……..
They are people, just like you, people who have a desire to contribute to the safety and protection of their community.
DID YOU KNOW…..
THAT there are many roles within the Fire/Rescue Service. There is a role for you – you can make a difference in someone’s life, simply by providing aid in a time of need. You could be a:
§ first responder (medical);
§ instructor;
§ fire suppression member;
§ emergency vehicle operator;
§ traffic controller, or
§ help in the office.
Did you know……….
That without your Volunteer Fire Department if you had a fire at your house, whether it is your home, your car, your travel trailer, etc. NO ONE would respond.
The city WILL NOT go out of city limits to attend!
Common Questions
How much time is expected of me?
Members are expected to have 60 hours of training in a year. Fire practices usually occur once a week for 2 to 3 hours.
Am I expected to attend all emergency calls?
No, it is understood that there will be times when a volunteer is not available. This is why there is a minimum number of volunteers required to operate a volunteer fire department — the more volunteers, the more people available to ensure a guaranteed response in sufficient numbers.
I work shift work, I may not be around all the time or at times may not be able to attend training sessions—is this a problem?
No, we understand that members cannot be available at all times — family and work come first. We do monitor attendance closely though; if a member is not very active, they may be asked to step down.
What duties do volunteer firefighters perform?
· respond to emergency call-outs for fires, medicals and highway rescues;
· train to recognized standard for fire fighting and highway rescue;
· provide public safety information, and
· maintain apparatus and equipment.
WE DO NOT EXPECT ANYONE TO DO ANYTHING
THEY ARE NOT COMFORTABLE DOING
What am I required to do for training?
The fire department will provide training in:
(1) Fire suppression—
a. use of hoses, ladders, ropes, fire apparatus;
b. use of self-contained breathing apparatus;
c. emergency vehicle driving;
d. radio communications;
e. hazards and fire prevention; and
f. incident command system.
(2) Emergency medical aid (First Responders Program)
(3) Motor vehicle incident management —
a. use of “jaws of life” and associated equipment;
b. scene, patient and public safety;
c. medical care for patient; and
d. working with other agencies, such as the Ambulance service and RCMP
There is a minimum standard of training required and then it is up to you how much more you want to put into your volunteer position.
